Last month McAfee posted a virus definition update that flagged SVCHOST.EXE as a virus. This is my story of what happened.
Windows needs svchost.exe to live. It’s like removing the transmission or engine of a car. Without it, each of those workstations, at best, had no networking capabilities or, even worse, were unable to boot entirely. You need svchost.exe, otherwise you are not going anywhere. On Wednesday morning, our help desk started logging a high volume of calls in which our drive-through computer was rebooting and not loading back into Windows XP properly.

Ich mag die Vorschläge grundsätzlich.

Aber die Wikipedia ist nicht vergleichbar mit Open Source Projekten. Selbst das größte OpenSource Projekt (Linux?) ist noch um Größenordnungen kleiner als die Wikipedia, wenn man sich die Datenmengen anschaut. Und möchte man für die Wikipedia einen Benevolent Dictator, der am Ende alle Entscheidungen trifft? Das Problem der Skalierung muss mit einer klugen Organisationsstruktur gelöst werden, aber eine solche zu etablieren ist absolut nicht einfach.

Vorschläge zur Verbesserung einer Community sind gut, aber sie müssen ja irgendwie durchgesetzt werden. Und die Wikipedia ist da tatsächlich ein Einzelfall, ein beispielloses Experiment ohne Vorlage.

Das Klonen (Stichwort Levitation) der ganzen Wikipedia ist zwar nett und stärkt die Macht des einzelnen (git-) Benutzers, löst aber nicht das grundsätzliche Problem, denn die Wikipedia soll ja einen Querschnitt alles Wissens sammeln. Dass man sich aus verschiedenen Quellen seine Sicht auf das Wissen zusammenbauen kann, ist erstens vom Aufwand her nicht möglich und widerspricht außerdem direkt der Idee der Wikipedia (die im Kern ja wohl unbestritten ist).

Eine nachhaltige Lösung wird deswegen nicht viel einfacher sein als die Etablierung einer neuen Staatsform. Es sollte vielleicht nochmal einen Bootstrappingprozess geben, der ein Grundlagenpapier zum Konsens bringt, von dem dann später die Legitimation ausgeht, bestimmte Dinge so oder so zu entscheiden. Wenn sich die Wikipedia und ihren eigenen Anspruch, ihre eigene Größe wirklich ernstnimmt, dann muss vielleicht jetzt (noch?) mal so ein Prozess her, der tatsächlich alle miteinbezieht und für den geworben wird und der mit einer "verfassungsgebenden" Großversammlung (online oder offline) endet, die den Konsens dann legitimiert.

Sollte dieses Bootstrapping mit der Wikimedia Foundation nicht funktionieren, müsste das eben eine andere Vereinigung tun und dann könnte tatsächlich Levitation zum Einsatz kommen, um einen Fork zu etablieren.
